Islamabad (Special Correspondent) — Chairperson of the Women’s Caucus and Deputy Speaker of Balochistan, Madam Ghazala Gola, met with Member of the National Assembly and Secretary General of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, Dr. Syeda Shahida Rehmani, in Islamabad. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed key national issues, particularly those related to women.
Dr. Shahida Rehmani emphasized that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is a party representing all four provinces and a true symbol of the federation. She noted that the PPP has consistently been a voice for the poor, farmers, laborers, women, minorities, and marginalized communities. She further stated that those who consider the PPP merely a provincial party lack understanding or are driven by bias.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, both leaders highlighted that the caucus is playing an active role in driving legal and social reforms to end violence against women. They mentioned that the caucus played a pivotal role in the implementation of important laws such as the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act (2010) and the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Act (2021), which safeguard women’s dignity, protection, and rights.
Dr. Shahida Rehmani expressed pride in her party’s unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment and progress. Paying tribute to the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, she pointed to revolutionary initiatives such as women’s police stations, the Lady Health Workers program, and the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), which have provided economic opportunities and autonomy to millions of women.
She further emphasized that even today, the BISP serves as a beacon of hope for underprivileged women in Pakistan, ensuring economic independence and social development, and has become a symbol of Pakistan’s commitment to women at the international level.
In her message, Dr. Shahida Rehmani called for collective action to end violence against women. She urged policymakers, civil society, and citizens to come together to protect and empower women. She also stressed the need for legal measures, cultural reforms, and robust support systems for survivors to ensure the protection of women’s rights.
In conclusion, Dr. Shahida Rehmani appealed to all stakeholders to help create a society where women can live free from fear, participate equally, and enjoy dignity and respect. She noted that a society based on the principles of equality, justice, and respect is the true guarantee of progress.
